Red-winged blackbirds

Here is a red-winged blackbird male on my patio today.
A female red-winged blackbird.
I think this is just another female, but with the red patch on the wing could it be a first year male?

Philly Zoo 2

Wednesday was such a beautiful day, especially at the Zoo.
This tortoise strikes a casual pose.
A penguin and his lair?
Here a male bird displays for that rather drab female.
This rhino posed for my favorite photo of the day.  Actually I think it was sleeping.
Another beautiful bird, from Africa, I think.
Another snake.  The reptile house was full of them.
The otters were so full of fun, we could have watched them all day.
There are 25 vertebrae in the neck of a goose and only 7 in the giraffe.  This black swan gives and excellent demonstration of a "goose neck".
Got an itch!
I took about 200 photos and these were probably the best.

Philadelphia Zoo 1

On this beautiful day a group of us took the Foulkeways bus to the zoo.
There were three lovely long necked critters.
A marvelous green snake.
Some critters sat for portrait pics.
One of the many beautiful birds.
So you think you have a weight problem.
Another fascinating bird.
Head out of the water,
And here's the rest of him.
And some cute critters.  More to follow.

Morris Arboretum

Today we took a mid-day trip to the Morris Arboretum, and this is the magnificent entrance slope.
Our first stop was in the wetland.
A painted turtle on a log, gathering the sun.
We saw tree swallows and not much else, as they were noisily working nearby in the meadow.
The noise didn't bother them.
The bell is always a big attraction with the younger set.
Beautiful magnolia blossoms.
Katsura tree from 1901.
Don't climb on the grasshopper.
Tulips in a pot near the rose garden.
And that is all I have room for.

Walking at Foulkeways

If you walk the loop of Perimeter Road and the Big Oak Path, it is about a mile.  But....
If you include Friends Way in your walk,
and take the loop past the barn,
and stroll past Woolman Storage,
and amble down the Loop Trail,
and meander along Shady Ramble, you can double the length of the walk to two miles.  Try it!

Super Saturday

Our birding group took off this morning for Swamp Creek Road in Sumneytown.
As you can see the Unami Creek was high and muddy, but we did see some fishermen.
We listen and look for birds from the bridge, and finally see a ruby-crowned kinglet, or hear it.
This chipping sparrow was seen at Green Lane Park.
The blackbird in the tree turned out to be nothing but a starling.
Back at Foulkeways, the bees were buzzing.  Don't forget there is a program which will be given by our beekeeper this Thursday evening.
Our mallard pair is swimming on the pond, and no geese in sight today.
A beautiful star magnolia at the Fitness Center.
Several star magnolias at Gwynedd House.
The beautiful magnolia at "C".
